I’ve worked in the caring and helping professions since my mid 20s. Ever since I was young, however, I’ve wanted to be a hairstylist. I was the kid in school starting the hair braiding chains and giving my dolls and barbies terrible haircuts; but I didn’t end up in the beauty industry. For nearly 20 years, I worked in marketing in the fields of healthcare and human services. After my divorce in 2009, I went back to school to become a special education teacher. I loved advocating for students, identifying and nurturing their strengths and passions, and supporting them on a path of discovery and independence. In my third year of teaching, however, my sons’ father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. I decided to resign to better support my sons and their father.
As I was getting ready to return to teaching, I read an article about the original owner of the The Hair Lady wig shop. She was retiring and looking for the right person to take over the business. We met and instantly clicked. I was so excited about the opportunity -- I'd almost be a hairstylist! More importantly, however, I felt I’d found a meaningful way to give back. This community held my sons and I in its embrace through my sons' father's illness, and I wanted to do the same for others in need of support. Over the next several months, Janise graciously apprenticed me, teaching me everything about the business from the ground up. Today, I continue to take master classes offered by various manufacturers, and am now a certified wig specialist -- yes, there really is such a thing! I love teaching my clients about this fascinating and complex
world of wigs.
